Caesar The Geezer & Dave Cash - Kenny Everett Tribute 4-4-1995

On the day Kenny Everett's death was announced Caesar took to the air with special guest Dave Cash who'd worked with Kenny in his pirate radio days on Radio London as well as later on Capital Radio. With very little Kenny material to play, listeners were invited to call in and play any recordings they might have. Caesar, Dave and the callers share reminiscences about Kenny.

Start of the Mike & Chad Show until tape runs out. (8 minutes)
After Wild Al did his 4 weeks on the station he was replaced with Mike & Chad. They also did 4 weeks. They did 2 more shows after this one, being replaced with Ian Collins on 10th April.

Caesar The Geezer's smoking protest 24-3-1995

This is Caesar's smoking protest show in it's entirety. (all news and ads intact apart from the first ad break which I cut at the time of recording.)

Caesar informed the listeners that he'd been told by management that he was no longer allowed to smoke in the studio, and by way of protest he was doing his show standing outside in Oxford Street.

4th hour
The start of the Nick Miller show (after Caesar until the tape runs out) (6 minutes)

I might as well add this in this post...

ads & trails & Caesar jingles, March 1995 (8 minutes)
A few disjointed clips. I was trying to record a particular show trail so I kept recording at the end of ad breaks in the hope they'd play it. It never got recorded over as I'd intended so here it is.

Talk Radio UK official start

After getting about 3 and a half hours sleep my alarm woke me rudely at around 5:50am. I started recording and listened for about 15 minutes then went back to sleep (and listened to the rest of it later in the day), my auto-reverse deck recording for the next 90 minutes.

You'll hear the last few minutes of the looped announcement before the station's official start at 6am. First is the 6am news with Sophie Decker and then "The Dish" with Samantha Meah & Sean Bolger. Caesar pops in during the show to talk about his most embarrassing moment. The recording ends at around 7:27am.

Official start with Sean Bolger & Samantha Meah, 14th Feb 1995
There are a few clicks (and a couple of silences) during the first few minutes. This isn't tape damage, it's how it sounded at the time.

Talk Radio UK starts in 1995

On 5th Feb 1995 I was watching "The Money Programme" on BBC2 and during one of the reports I saw a poster in the background that read "Talk Radio UK ... 1053/1089 medium wave". I can't remember what the report was about but I'm fairly sure it was nothing to do with the station itself. The poster caught my eye though. I'd never heard of that station so I tuned my radio in and heard a test broadcast. This was a sortof 27 minute showreel where each presenter introduced themself and told us a little about what they'd be offering the station.

Here's a recording I made on 5th Feb 1995.
Test Broadcast #1

In the recording we were told the station was starting in 14th Feb and you'll hear Caesar The Geezer, Wild Al Kelly & Mad Mike Hanson / Gary Jacobs, Terry Christian, Jeremy Beadle / Samantha Meah, Sean Bolger, Vanessa Feltz / Anna Raeburn, Nancy Roberts, Tommy Boyd, Dr David Starkey.

Wild Al & Mike were particularly astute in predicting how long they'd last on the station. (Wild Al : "I'd give it 2 weeks" ... Mike : "3 weeks".) In fact they lasted 4 weeks.

That recording ran on a continuous loop until sometime on 8th Feb when it was changed for another recording. This one ran for 38 minutes before looping back round again.

Test Broadcast #2
You'll hear Jeremy Beadle, Anna Raeburn / Terry Christian, Sean Bolger, Samantha Meah / Tommy Boyd, Nancy Roberts / Dr David Starkey, Vanessa Feltz / Maurice (Moz) Dee, Scott Chisholm.

Sometime on 12th Feb this was replaced by a short looped announcement lasting about 4 minutes.

Test Broadcast #3
This ran continuously until the evening of 13th Feb.

At 10pm on 13th Feb Caesar The Geezer appeared on the air and did his show! I tuned in at around 10:45pm and was surprised to hear a show in progress. Caesar took a lot of callers, and the callers were obviously his listeners from a previous station. I'd been listening for at least an hour before Caesar read out the phone number! I had no idea how all those listeners knew Ceasar was going to be on the air at that time or how they knew the number, but I'm assuming that Caesar somehow put out the word to his fans so they knew to listen.

Caesar finished his show at 1am then Wild Al Kelly did one hour before the station went back to a slightly re-worded version of the earlier looped anouncement at 2am. This ran until the station's official start at 6am.

Unfortunately I didn't make any recordings that evening. I wonder if anyone else did?
